Movie ‘Avatar’ is analyzed to globalization.

                                                                          Ellen Lee

-Introduction-
The Movie ‘Avatar’ ‘s story is about how Jake Sully changes from a human to an avatar.
Jake Sully was one of the sky-people before he was one of the Na’vi tribe.
The movie can be compared with historical globalization as it shows Jake’s process of change to an avatar. The sky-people are looking for resources so they find the planet Pandora. where there are useful minerals and they meet the Na’vi. This is similar to historical globalization which included cultural contact, colonialism, ethnocentrism, marginalization.

-Body-

Paragraph 1 cultural contact and colonialism
When the sky-people came the planet of Pandora to find some resources the sky-people make an avatar. and they try to contact through an avatar and the sky-people built a school so they can teach English the Na’vi to control them. It is an example of cultural contact and colonialism. and this is similar to Japan and Korea relations, and the First Nations of Canada.

Paragraph 2 ethnocentrism
In the movie. the sky-people’s army general thinks “we don’t need to learn the Na’vi tribe’s culture. we have to get resources” compared with Japan thought. when Japan was come in Korea Japan thinks “Korea’s culture is not important so Korea have to learn our culture”.
sky-people’s army general’s thought similar to Japan thought.

Paragraph 3 marginalization
I think When Jake came the Na’vi tribe’s place. Jake was ignored to the Na’vi tribe it seems like marginalization. This is similar to an outcast in school, company etc.

Avatar Essay
The following essay will show the connection to the fictional movie, Avatar, with real-life, historical globalization. The Na’vi and human contact show a great deal of similarity with the European-Native contact. If you compare any of the major events in the movie to history, the settling of North America and enslavement of African’s, both show ethnocentrism, marginalization, and assimilation. James Cameron and his writing team undoubtedly planned these things when he came up with the plot and story. By the end of this essay I hope to prove that history can and will repeat if given a chance.

I’m going to start with assimilation as my first topic of discussion; namely the Avatar Program. The Avatar program was made so that the scientist’s could interact with the Na’vi on a personal level, but the program was funded by the company, whose intention was to as Parker Selfridge, the Head administrator for the RDA on Pandora, says paraphrased, “…If you walk like them, you talk like them; they'll trust you. We build them a school, teach them English. But after - how many years - the relations with the indigenous are only getting worse.” This is basically is saying that the Avatar Program was made to show the Na’vi how they were supposed to act.

Marginalization is shown throughout the movie. It is most prevalent with the people that haven’t actually interacted and talked to the Na’vi. I’m sure that Jake Sully was feeling this when he first arrived on Pandora and accepted Mile’s Quatrich’s offer and in return he could get his real legs back once he got back to earth. In this instance he is showing that he thinks that the many Na’vi living in the Hometree, for who knows how long, are no were near as important than his legs. The other

Our history has played a very important role in where we are today, and how we are as people in our everyday lives.  The movie Avatar recognizes a great deal of our history, what has happened in the past, what is happening now and what is still yet to come. Avatar was a movie created by James Cameron; it was one of the most popular action movies of the year. Many of us may think it’s just a movie, but was that all that the famous director was trying to get across? They touch on cultural contact, colonialism, marginalization, ethnocentrism, and white man’s burden. These are just a few of the topics that they touch base on, which are key points in the movie and of course our history.

The humans also referred to as the “Sky People” go in and they set up sites on the land and try to take over Pandora; Very similar to the situation when the Europeans came in and invaded the Native people and there land. The humans figured that since they were there now, that they were free to do whatever they may please. This is an example that represents cultural contact.

The humans have it stuck in their heads that the culture of their people and the way they choose to live life was good, the right way and the only way. Na’vi peoples culture was ignored, the sky people took out the Na’vi’s home tree, and the sacred trees with access to communication to the ancestors. Sky people were very selfish they wanted the Na’vi to leave off into the forest, and leave everything behind. Simply because it benefits the humans in a better way.

Jake Sulley goes into his second body, the one as an Avatar, there he will learn the Na’vi people’s way of life and become one of them. As well as learning the culture and identity of the Na’vi.

                                                                Introduction:
Globalization in its simplest terms is the combining of cultures for the overall growth of society via cultural contact.  James Cameron directed the movie Avatar with ties loosely relating to globalization through the western colonialism theme.  Throughout this essay I will be exploring the key concepts of contact between cultures: ethnocentrism, marginalization, and colonialism relating back to the film.  Avatar conveys key plot lines from important events in history and how they shape our overall worldview in this time period.
                                                                                Body #1: Ethnocentrism
The relationship between the Sky People and the humans, relating back to how selective beings in a species promote the superiority of an individual.

                                                                                Body#2: Marginalization
The power shift between the ranking of species/ people.

                                                                                Body#3: Colonialism
The affects as a whole on governing and control over land, people, and space.
                                                                                Conclusion:
State how past can affect the present and how cultural contact is needing for any growth to be obtained at all.  Reinstate opinion, and reword introduction.

Throughout history, people have believed that to be successful or important, they have to take over other people or countries or try to take something that’s not theirs. If you compare the Award winning Avatar to the settling of North America, the events are very similar. In both Avatar And the settling of North America, ethnocentrism, acculturation, Cultural contact, marginalization, colonialism all took place.

Paragraph 1- If the things that took place were good or bad?

Nobody can say weather the things that took place in avatar or even in our history were good or bad because it depends on who’s side your looking at. In avatar if your looking at the side of the NA’VI people, the thing’s that happened to them in the beginning and near the end were horrible. In the end, the NA’VI beat the humans and sent them back to earth. The First Nations life was pretty good before the Europeans came over. When the Europeans came over they slaughtered and took everything from the First Nations. Nearly the same exact happenings happened to the NA’VI and the First Nations, like people coming and taking and destroying their lands and taking their resources. The Europeans and the humans (sky people from avatar) are very similar because they both went to a different place to get resources.

Paragraph 2- Ethnocentrism & White Man's Burden

Ethnocentrism means that one ethnic group or culture thinks they are superior to others. Ethnocentrism and White Man's Burden are very similar because the White Man's Burden is when they think they have to fix every different culture and race. The white people actually thought that they were helping the other cultures and races by changing them into 'white' people. In the movie Avatar, they mentioned White Man's Burden but they never actually show it. The 'sky people' build schools to get the NA'VI to learn english and to learn how the 'sky people' live. There is also Ethnocentrism because the 'sky people' think they are better than the NA'VI and that the humans can take the NA'VI's resources.

Paragraph 3- Acculturation & Cultural Contact & Colonialism

Acculturation and cultural contact are very similar. Without cultural contact we can not have acculturation.

Paragraph 4- Marginalization

The navi like the first nations people both have great respect for there ancestors and listen to there wisdom and life lessons they have to teach they respect the land because thy understand the animals are just as important as they are in there lives

How the outsiders are threatening the way of life for the navi just as the colonists did to the first nations. The sky people destroy there homes and memoires witch is there whole source of hope in there lives like when the colonists wiped out there food and destroyed many of there hopes and dreams with alcohol. When the sky people started branching out destroying more of the forest with there lust they destroyed the trees witch contains the memories of there ancestors witch is some they value above every thing they have then while they try to recover at there homes the sky people knocked over there home a giant tree killing children. Like the first nations the colonists brought over great new things the first nations people adored but once they gave them a taste of this new hope they toke it away. The natives always had a rich source of food but when the colonists came there greed went ramped and stated wiping out herds of the buffalo then they had nothing. Then the first nations tribe were introduced to alcohol witch is the worst thing imaginable for a race that has never had it the alcohol will kill sense of right and wrong ad self respect and worth.

Introduction:
If you think about it the movie Avatar somewhat reflects our history relatively well. The Na’vi tribe and the first nations peoples of Canada were both somewhat related to each other from how they were treated by other people of different ethnicities. The Na’vi and the first nations related through cultural contact & colonialism, ethnocentrism, and marginalization. But some people may not think about how they relate if they don’t consider how they relate.

Paragraph One: Cultural Contact & Colonialism
Cultural contact is the contact between two or more cultures and colonialism is when someone puts a settlement or colony on another land other than your own. In Avatar the Na’vi tribe comes into cultural contact with the Sky People when they came to their planet to take the resources underneath the land the Na’vi people lived in.

Paragraph Two: Ethnocentrism
Ethnocentrism is when someone or a group of people believe that their ethnicity is better than everyone else’s.

Paragraph Three: Marginalization
Marginalization is placing something or someone into a position of importance, influence, or power.

“You want a fair deal? You’re on the wrong planet. The strong pray on the weak, that’s just the way things are.” – Jake Sully.

This quote is much like the Europeans unfair trading with the natives. They took the natives natural resources and sold them back to them. The movie avatar touched on many things for example ethnocentrism, marginalization, and white mans burden (according to Rudyard Kipling). These are the points that I will be focusing on in my essay. Both in the movie and in the past the “sky people” or Europeans should have realized what they were doing and how unfair and ethnocentric it was.

Introduction

Don’t let the military control you or you can be the one being colonized. In this essay I will be covering the aspects of cultural contact, marginalization and the role of ethnocentrism in the movie avatar and our natives of 1900’s. Like when the navi where moved and had fought back to control the planet again from the humans. Almost like when our natives had fought Europeans to regain the control of their land. I intend to convince you that our military needs to stop trying to move natives and other cultures out of their land.

Body

Paragraph 1
Cultural contact like when the navi had came in contact with the humans.

Paragraph 2
Marginalization like when Jake had became an avatar.

Paragraph 3
Ethnocentrism is when the humans think their religion is the best but the navi think theirs is better.

Conclusion

I hope I had convinced you that the navi and our natives should be left alone and not colonized and changed. If not changed then we can have more cultures and can have our native cultures can go on till time ends. You may ask yourself that why I would try to convince you but I am trying to show you what you as a society and a race that we need to stop our actions and think if they are actually necessary and if we absolutely need to do it. So take that into consideration next you root for native colonization.

In our lifetime we learn about how our history has effected our every day lives. We now survive on social networking, and constant interaction through our work, school, friends etc… Our ability to contact and connect with people started through our ancestors, which has an affect on modern life and the way we live, in a large way. There has been many representations of our history, and Avatar is a great example. The movie connects with many parts of globalization. Avatar gives many examples and relates to our past such as cultural contact, colonization, ethnocentrism, and marginalization.

Throughout the movie we are constantly experiencing examples of cultural contact. Jake Sully is sent to a plant-like moon named Pandora on a quest to connect with the people who maintain and make a living on Pandora, known as the Na’vi. Scientist on earth realized that earth is in need of new natural resources, and Pandora has what they want. Sully has a job, to connect and become one of the Na’vi. “Sky People” need to be trusted in order to get the resources they desperately need. Though, as we are lead to think everything is well, we find out there is two sides the “Sky People”. The scientists are slowly being trusted and let into the Na’vi’s lives and ways, but when time gets ticking the other side comes to the surface.

Na’vi and “Sky People” start to mesh, and become a team. They work with each other to become better as one. Na’vi peoples show Jake the way of the land, and their culture. "Everything is backwards now, its like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream", says Jake Sully while making a video blog. Jake becomes one of them himself, liking the Pandora way of life more than what was raised to know. Grace, a scientist from earth, shows them the knowledge and schooling we know, and what is common to us. Soon there is a connection, and the scientist get closer. They make a way of life, and a way to live on Pandora with the Na’vi peoples.

As the movie progresses we learn that, other than the scientist, the Sky People begin to think that the Na’vi peoples need to learn their ways. They need to begin to live in a certain way. The Sky People feel the need to take what they want, and not let the Na’vi in their way. Jake Sully takes it upon himself to warn the Na’vi of their ways, and what they plan on doing. "With your permission, I will speak now. You would honor me by translating", quote from Jake Sully, said to Tsu'tey, trying to prepare the Na'vi people to fight back. Though, with his attempt, the Na'vi peoples weapons weren't any competition facing the Sky Peoples'.

In the attempt of the Sky People taking over the Na’vi, they go above and beyond what is needed. They target one of the most sacred part of the Na’vi culture, Hometree. The Na’vi peoples make a living and a lifestyle off of Hometree. With many simularities to the First Nations, the Na’vi peoples are pushed aside. Their thoughts, feeling, and beliefs are ignored. The Sky People have not only destroyed that generation of Na'vi peoples, but have probably ended any generations to come. The Na'vi peoples lives are destroyed, they no longer have the only thing they were raised on. Without that, they can not keep a populated culture.

Comparing the First Nation peoples, and the Na’vi peoples, they are treated the same in many ways. Both cultures experience the harsh reality of colonization, marginalization, assimilation, ethnocentrism. Our past has such a impact on the way we live today, and on for many generations. We are constantly reminded of what happened during those times, and how the First Nations were affected. To this day, the First Nation peoples are still feeling the affects of their culture being assimilated. To think, all of this started with cultural contact. In our everyday lives, we constantly hear about current representations of cultural contact. We can only wonder if another culture will, one day, be treated like the First Nations, and Na’vi peoples were.

Avatar Essay
Shayla Derr

The movie Avatar represents some of our historical past. Our historical globalization is important to how our society and culture isformed and shaped to this day. The movie Avatar, directed by James Cameron, has strong connections to our historical globalization. It represents our past, when the Europeans came to North America and took over the rights and land of the First Nations, but in the future. The “Sky People” tried to develop cultural contact, assimilation, and colonialism with the Na’vi people of Pandora. It also ties to our historical globalization through conflicts of ethnocentrism, marginalization, apathy, and depopulation. It shows our historical globalization, repeating itself.

The “Sky People” (people from Earth, given the name Sky People by the Na’vi), are after a precious metal, called Unobtainium, which is located under the surface of Pandora. But the Sky People thought their rights overweighed the rights of the “savages”. This of course turned out terribly bad for the Sky People as the Na’vi felt that their needs, religion, rights and land were not being respected. This much relates to our First Nations when the Europeans took over the First Nations land and rights. The Europeans thought they were smarter, and better than the First Nations. Due to this, the Europeans tried to assimilate the First Nations, teaching them the Europeans ways of religion, speech and culture. Taking away their identity and forcing them to take on a different identity. Disrespecting the rights of the others.

“So what? They can move to another tree!” quoted from Avatar’s Parker Selfridge. The Sky People didn’t see the importance of the Hometree or the Na’vi’s relationship with the land and nature. They marginalized the Na’vi’s rights and went ahead and took over the land. They showed little empathy for the Na’vi and how the Na’vi lived off the land. This relates to when the Europeans forced the First Nations onto reserves and set the First Nations below them in class and society. But the Sky People are not the only ones at fault for pushing away a different culture. The Na’vi didn’t want anything to do with the Sky People. “Your fault! You are like a baby; making noise, don't know what to do. You should not come here, all of you! You only come and make problems. Only.” Avatar’s Neytiri snaps at Jake Sully when she has killed the wolves to save him. Neytiri here shows the Na’vi’s hatred for the Sky People and the Sky People’s carelessness for the Na’vi’s land.

The Sky People set up colonies on Pandora, on the Na’vi’s land, caring little about what they were affecting. This made the cultural contact between the two cultures strained and unpleasant. The Sky People thought of the Na’vi as dumb savages, and didn’t care about their connections the nature and land. All they wanted was land and getting the Unobtainuim. The Sky People couldn’t care less! They wanted what they wanted and they were going to get it! They weren’t going to wait, and the Na’vi didn’t have any interest in any of the Sky People’s offers. So, the Sky People went straight ahead, thinking the Na’vi were weak, fighting, forcing the Na’vi to move away from the Hometree so that they could get the Unobtainium. The Na’vi’s anger hit the roof and they decided to show the Sky People that they were not dumb, stupid savages. They too, had power. and they were going to use it if they had to. They started war, standing up for what they believe, and what was theirs.

The actions that were made in the movie Avatar by the Sky People, relate to the actions of the Europeans when they came to North America. The Europeans thought their rights overpowered the rights of the First Nations, much like the Sky People with the Na’vi. They pushed the First Nations rights, religions and culture aside and marginalized the First Nations, which also relates to Avatar. And lastly, they made little effort at cultural contact with the First Nations to try and learn and empathy their religion and ways of life. Instead, the Europeans set up colonies and forced them onto reserves and tried to assimilate them. Putting them into lower class and society. The movie Avatar has a strong connection to our past. Even though our history is in the past, Avatar is set in the future. It is history repeating itself. And I think it is important that we remember what happened and never let it happen again.
